The hip is involved in every movement, through acting as the prime mover, a lever or a stabiliser. You spend time sitting on your glutes (hip muscles), walking and propelling yourself through space using the hip muscles. Playing sport or training in the gym definitely uses your hip muscles, joints and nerves to produce strength and efficient movement. When your hip isn’t prepared for these movements either in the gym, during sport or just for daily life, the hip may be painful or stiff.
A complete assessment is necessary as these issues can be challenging to resolve if a full evaluation is not completed. It’s important to realise that not all hip pain will come from the hip itself. Hip pain can be referred from the back, abdominals or hip flexor muscles. Disc pathologies and nerve compressions can be a cause of hip pain too. An examination is essential to find the correct diagnosis and not make assumptions.
Myotherapy and Remedial Massage practitioners will conduct assessments that may involve range-of-motion, orthopedic, neurological & movement specific tests to determine the leading cause of your hip pain. Athletes are particularly at risk for hip and groin injuries due to the nature of their sport, requiring more coordination and higher levels of speed and force exerted on the hip muscles. Myotherapy and Remedial Massage treatments will focus primarily on the muscles and joints of the hip, aiming to improve range-of-motion and muscle length-tension relationships. You will likely be prescribed specific stretches and homework exercises to produce long term results for hip pain.
Signs of hip issues beyond pain:
- Deep aching during the day and/or when you wake up
- Hard to stand up if you’ve been sitting down for a while
- Hurts to walk up or downstairs
- Painful sleeping on one or both sides
- loss of balance
- loss of confidence in movements
